We are in the business of promoting health living choices for young women. We do this through the creation and distribution of the new Turning Points (TP2) program which consists of three interrelated elements: a video,
this website, and a unique interpersonal context.
The video is a 14-part psychoeducational program depicting a group of university
women engaged in savvy discussion about healthy lifestyle
issues regarding body image, eating and exercise habits, mind and body connections, managing stresses and personal relationships.
The video was produced in late 2005 by a team of dedicated women graduate students here at Lakehead University through the financial support of the Ontario Ministry of
Health and Long Term Care in partnership with the Health Canada Primary Health Care Transition
Fund. The team
is disseminating the video to young women where the majority spend their productive
time; in the educational environments of high schools, colleges, and
universities. Health care facilities are also being targetted as partnering facilities with this program.
The second element of TP2 is this website where we will continue to post relevant materials and information that is consistent with the health promotion goal of this program.
The third and probably most important element is the unique interpersonal context of the discussion group experience offered
in our partnering educational and health care settings where women can view the video material, explore these
issues with each other, exchange experience and personal wisdom, and take away whatever each participant finds personally relevant in managing their own lives in these important areas.
Given our original source of funding, we are currently focussing this initiative on women living in the Province of Ontario, Our dream is to go nationwide across Canada. Wish us luck in our efforts to find the funding source to make this a reality.
